YEAR 2 Visit by the Fire Brigade |
| As part of their curriculum work in History and Geography, our Year 2 children were delighted to receive a visit from the Hampshire Fire Service on Tuesday 3rd November, 2009. The children have been learning about the Great Fire of London and were able to relate their knowledge of that to the fire safety message the firefighters brought home to them in talking about fire risks and dangers. The strong message "Get out, stay out, dial 999" was discussed and has taught the children how to behave safely in the event of a fire. |
They also learned a catchy rhyme which they are still singing word for word some days later! "Matches and lighters never touch They can hurt you very much". As you will see from our photographs, the firefighters brought with them their 'appliance' and the children took it in turns to dress up in protective fire gear and go outside to look at and learn all about how fire engines respond in the event of a fire. They were delighted to be allowed to 'drive' the fire engine and even to have a go at pretending to put out a fire with a (child-sized) hose! As the remit of the Fire Brigade also covers roads and road safety, the firefighters also talked with the children at length about the importance of staying safe on the roads - wearing your cycling helmet, crossing the road safely and how to recognise safe crossing places like zebra and pelican crossings. We hope that our pictures of this event reflect how much fun the children had learning about this important subject! The school is, as always, very grateful to Hampshire Fire Service for coming in to talk to the children once again this year.
